Strongbow Airedales

Family Dogs For Show and Field

In Memory of Randy and Winston

In Memoriam - Randall  L. Cooley - 1943 - 2002

Randy Cooley passed away very unexpectedly Wednesday, May 28th, 2002.  He was president of the Wisconsin Airedale Terrier Club and a member of the ATCA since 1995. Randy was a true ambassador for the breed, the ATCA and the ATCA Hunting Working Committee. Many of you will remember him as banquet auctioneer at the last two Montgomery Weekends.

During the last few years he was on the team” of ATCA members who put on the Airedale Field Nationals. His background in retriever training was a positive force in the H/W Committee’s quest to restore the Airedale to its rightful place in the gun dog world. His Winston, Ch. Moraine Prime Minister, MHV, became the first champion of record to obtain the ATCA Title, Master Hunter Versatile.

Randy also served, along with other ATCA members, on the AKC Versatility Field Development Committee and was a member / supporter of the National Field of Champions Club. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, three children and three grandchildren. Randy will be missed very much by his many friends in the world of dogs.

The Winston & Randy Cooley Memorial Trophy

This trophy is in memory of a very special Airedale and his devoted handler, and symbolizes the loving bond and partnership between them. It honors the tremendous hard work and extraordinary accomplishment of attaining the Master Hunter Versatile title. The MHV award is the highest level of retrieving, upland and fur. The qualifier of this title shall have his/her name along with his/her handlers name engraved on the base.

His nickname was “Mufasa” …. and he was truly “A King” …. a leader…. strong, confident, bold, and courageous, intelligent, intense … majestic ! He was a magnificent dog in many ways, and he accomplished so much in his 10+ years. He became the first champion Airedale in the country to earn the Master Hunter Versatile title. He won special awards at hunting/working, and he won the Best in Duel Titled Class at two Floating Specialties.

His famous picture is in two Airedale books and it made the cover of the Proposal for the Admission of Airedale Terriers to AKC Hunt Tests. He was also featured in Gun Dog and Dog World Magazine.

Winston left a wonderful legacy of generations of fine Airedales that have shown their greatness in the show, obedience and agility ring and especially in the home and field. Three in particular are Strongbow Texas Ranger CDX, JHV, SHFur, who recently became a nationally ranked Airedale in Open A and B Obedience, by Front & Finish; Strongbow Breezy Ella Louise CD, RN, JHV and, U-AGIII Strongbow Copper Starr MX, AXJ, NJC, TN-O, NGC, WV-N.

Winston was a grand Airedale, who gave us unforgettable memories (including his ever-cute “give me five” with his paw) and he filled us with tremendous pride and enjoyment in every moment of his being. He is sadly missed by all who knew him.
